Deep Dish Apple Crisp

Deep Dish Apple Crisp

A cozy, golden-baked classic that tastes like home — with a little extra love.

There’s something about apple crisp that brings instant comfort. The tender, cinnamon-spiced apples, the buttery oat topping, and that unmistakable aroma drifting from the oven — it’s the kind of dessert that wraps you in nostalgia.

But this isn’t just any apple crisp — this is Deep Dish Apple Crisp. That means extra apples, extra crumble topping, and extra satisfaction in every bite. Baked in a deep dish, it’s heartier than your average crisp and perfect for feeding a crowd or serving as the centerpiece of a fall dessert table.

Whether you’re using freshly picked apples from the orchard or whatever’s in your fruit bowl, this recipe always delivers warm, old-fashioned goodness. It’s simple to make, but never fails to impress — especially when served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting on top.

Deep Dish Apple Crisp – The Recipe

Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 8–10 cups apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)

For the topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter or grease a deep 9x13-inch baking dish or a large deep pie dish.

  2. Make the apple filling:
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Mix well to coat evenly. Pour into your prepared baking dish.

  3. Make the crumble topping:
In a separate bowl, mix together flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work it into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Assemble and bake:
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crisp.

  5. Cool slightly before serving:
Let the crisp cool for about 10–15 minutes to allow the juices to settle.

Serving Tips:

  • Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for a bit of crunch.

  • Great for holidays, potlucks, or any night you need a little comfort in a bowl.

Deep Dish Apple Crisp is more than dessert — it’s a reminder that simple ingredients, when baked with love, can create something truly special. Whether you're serving it fresh from the oven or sneaking a cold bite from the fridge the next day, it never disappoints.
